Check your Risk of Diabetes

In the wake of this year’s World Health Day (April ) which this year focussed on diabetes, Diabetes UK has been calling on men of all ages to go online to find out their risk of Type 2 diabetes by going online to use its Know Your Risk online tool. The focus on fellas comes after findings from one million visits showed that 38% more women than men are using the online tool, despite men being at greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The Know Your Risk tool is a simple to use online version of a questionnaire developed by Diabetes UK, the University of Leicester and the University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust. Based on the key risk factors for Type 2 diabetes such as age, gender, weight, waist measurement and ethnicity, it gives a calculated analysis of an individual’s risk of having or developing the condition.

West Ham coach Tony Carr MBE has Type 2 diabetes and is keen to raise awareness of the issue. He says: “When I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2005, I had been losing weight and feeling terrible. I didn’t have a clue what diabetes was. Since then, I’ve really worked hard to take care of myself, eat well and stay active. To hear that Diabetes UK has already had one million visits to its Know Your Risk of Type 2 diabetes tool is really encouraging. I can’t recommend enough that people go online and check their own risk.”

Helen Dickens, Head of Prevention at Diabetes UK, says, “With no time to waste, it is fantastic that West Ham legends have got behind our call to men to get online now so they can understand their risk of Type 2 diabetes, and if they are at increased risk, take crucial steps now to give themselves the best chances of living healthy lives.”

West Ham’s captain Mark Noble says: “It only takes a few minutes to check your risk of Type 2 diabetes with Diabetes UK’s online test. If you haven’t already, get online and use it. If you are at risk of Type 2 this test gives you the chance to take action now. Taking care of your health isn’t just important for footballers everyone needs to look after themselves – so check it out!”
