Bariatric surgery improves diabetes outcomes

Recent research has shown that bariatric (weight-loss surgery) beats lifestyle intervention for the reduction of T2 diabetes. In arandomized clinical trial conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from October 1, 2009, to June 26, 2014 the three-year outcomes of bariatric surgery were studies versus lifestyle intervention for treating Type 2 diabetes. The research revealed both partial and complete T2DM remission including a reduction of the use of diabetes medications and weight change. The report concluded that among obese participants with T2D, bariatric surgery with two years of a concurrent lifestyle intervention resulted in more disease remission than did lifestyle intervention alone. The one-year results from this trial showed that gastric bypass was the most effective treatment, followed by gastric banding for both T2DM remission and weight loss.
